Edit a Member Profile

Edit a Member Profile

What a profile holds, what the member edits, what an admin may correct, and how to change the fields themselves.

What a Profile Is

Every member has one profile: headline, a few lines about themselves, company, location, time zone, industries, skills, how they like to help, links, a photo, and for founders the link to their business. It is seeded from their application answers when the account is created and filled in by the member from Settings, My Profile (Save Changes at the top).

The profile is what the directory shows and what matching reads. The readiness list on the Overview tells a member what is still missing before they can be matched.

What an Admin May Change

ChangeWhere
First name, last name, emailSettings, Members, row menu, Edit Details
Role and capabilitiesSettings, Members, Change Access
Shown in the directory or hiddenSettings, Members, Hide from Directory
Active or pausedSettings, Members, Deactivate
Their photo, bio, skills, headlineNot editable by an admin. Ask the member, or see below.

The directory offers the same three admin actions: open a card, click Manage, then Edit Details, Change Access or Hide from Directory.

Changing the Fields Themselves

If a field is mislabeled, needs different help text, should be required for matching, or a new question should be asked of everyone, that is Settings, Member Fields.

  • Sections: Required to be matched, Optional, Added by your team, Removed.
  • Add Field asks: Belongs to, Field name, Help text, Answer type (Short text, Long text, Number, Dropdown, Multi-select), Choices, Who is asked (Founder, Mentor, Investor, Volunteer, Partner; empty means everybody), and the Required to be matched switch.
  • Removing a field hides it; Restore brings it back. Core fields that matching depends on carry a lock and cannot be removed.

The lists people pick from (industries, skills, ways to help) are under Settings, Tag Lists. See Forms and Fields.

Re-seeding a Profile From the Application

If a member's profile is empty although they applied (for example, an account created before the seeding existed), a developer can re-run the seed for that account with the reseed:profiles script. It only fills gaps; a member's own edits are never overwritten.

What the Member Sees

  • Settings, My Profile: everything above.
  • Settings, Business Profile (founders): the business. See Businesses and Organizations.
  • Settings, Sharing (founders): what partner organizations may see about them, within the policy set under Settings, Organization Sharing.
  • The profile dialog in the directory shows their card as others see it, with an Edit button on their own.
